Rev. Carol Myokei Himaka, Resident Minister, officiated at an informal dedication service on June 17 of the St. Shinran statue at Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church. This service was in recognition of Mrs. Arlyne Shibata’s donation of the life-size statue of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
In honor of her husband, Mr. P.A. Shibata, and his parents, Mr.and Mrs. Zenjuro Shibata, the St. Shinran statue was Mrs. Shibata’s gift to mark SACBC’s 50th Anniversary, which will be celebrated on September 23, 2012. At that time, a formal Dedication Service will be done to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of SACBC and the 750th Anniversary of Shinran Shonin.
The 400- pound bronze statue of St. Shinran was shipped from Kyoto in October of 2010, and arrived at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church a couple months later. Prior to the contractor and crew’s moving the statue into the Hondo lobby, the foundation flooring had to be reinforced, and wall had to be recessed six inches for the statue’s case.
We are especially indebted to the supervision of Mr. Bob Kitajima and Mr.Yasushi Yamada, on the culmination of many months of work on this project. A commemorative plaque was engraved for this most auspicious occasion. The finishing touches of a bed of polished stones at the base of the St. Shinran statue adds to a warm welcome to all who enter Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church Hondo building.
